BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS STATEMENT
It has been a long and challenging 12 months or so due to the COVID pandemic. But I am sure that we are all pleased that, gradually, things seem to be moving toward some sense of normality. Clubs across our network are beginning to re-open and activity is once again starting to take place.
In addition, many of our member Boxing clubs are starting to re-open their doors. We are aware of the statement that England Boxing have made regarding the resumption of their various championships and that they hope to complete their numerous tournaments between September and the end of this year.
We had hoped that we would be able to run our own UK-wide Boxing Championships but considering the statement by England Boxing the only time available would be a 2-week slot in October.
A great deal of discussion has taken place and NABGC have reached the decision to postpone our championships for this year.
This decision has not been made lightly but we do not wish to burden boxers, volunteers / coaches or officials during what will be an already busy schedule in the boxing community’s calendar. The welfare of Boxers is our paramount consideration, as is the welfare of officials, coaches and volunteers. It is going to be a very abrupt and busy end to the pandemic for all those involved in boxing and we really do not want to load any further pressure on them.
We are pleased to say that England Boxing have sanctioned our championships for the next three-years in our usual slot from October to December, starting in 2022 and we are very appreciative of their ongoing support for our prestigious championships.
We would like to take this opportunity to let you know that we will be hosting a different boxing event in early 2022 when our Class C & D Champions from 2019 will box against the Army’s Champions. More details will follow about this exciting event soon.
We are also offering an alternative fitness-based competition for our affiliated youth clubs and boxing clubs with our “Britain’s Fittest Teen” event being run in partnership with the Fitness Racing Federation and funded by Sport England. More details of this can be found on our website here – https://www.nabgc.org.uk/event/521/
Boxing forms a key part of our programme and we are confident that our championships will return stronger than before. For now, we look forward to supporting our clubs to emerge from the pandemic and serving young people. In the meantime, we wish all the boxers the very best of luck in the various England Boxing Championships.
